Ending the homework battle: a calmer evening routine

Homework time is the flashpoint in many ADHD households. A practical routine with snack, setup, short blocks and clear endings.

For many families, homework is the daily storm. Arguments, tears, hours at the table with little done, and everyone exhausted by bedtime. If this sounds familiar, you are not failing, and neither is your child. Homework is a collection of the very tasks that ADHD makes hard: starting, sustaining effort, remembering instructions and finishing.

A simple, predictable routine can calm things down.

1. Decompress first

After school, a child's brain has been working hard to meet the day's demands. Give a break of 30 to 45 minutes with a snack, water and something relaxing before homework. Movement or outdoor play is ideal.

2. Set up the space

  • A clear table with only what is needed.
  • Good light.
  • Phone and distractions out of reach.
  • A timer visible.

3. Start with a plan

Together, list the homework in order. Estimate how long each item takes. Begin with something easy or interesting to build momentum, or with the hardest task if your child is freshest now. Experiment.

4. Use short blocks

Work in 10 to 20 minute blocks, with 3 to 5 minute breaks. Tick off each item. A visible checklist is satisfying.

5. Stay nearby, but not hovering

Being in the room helps. Do your own task, such as reading or paperwork. Be available for questions, not constant checking. Offer hints, not answers.

6. Keep a firm end time

Agree a stopping time. If the work is still not done, write a note to the teacher rather than continuing late into the night. Tired homework helps nobody. Talk to the teacher if homework is regularly taking far longer than intended.

7. Praise effort and process

"You stuck with that tough question" builds more than "good marks".

8. Keep emotions in check

If tempers rise, pause. A calm adult is the best tool.

Communicate with school

Ask teachers for homework in writing, shorter tasks or flexible deadlines where appropriate. Many teachers are happy to help once they understand.

ZEKO fits into this routine with short sessions, one next thing to do, and a session summary that gives a clear sense of "done".

Study time your brain actually wants to finish

Short quizzes, one clear next step and streaks that forgive a missed day.
