Exam anxiety and ADHD: calming strategies for students and parents
Anxiety often travels with ADHD. Simple breathing, preparation and mindset tools to take the edge off exam stress.

Some nerves before an exam are normal and even helpful. But for many students with ADHD, exams bring extra worry: fear of running out of time, forgetting what they know or making careless slips. ADHD and anxiety also occur together fairly often, so exam stress can be intense.
If anxiety is severe, persistent or affecting sleep and eating, speak to a doctor or counsellor. The strategies below are everyday supports, not treatment.
Before the exam
- Prepare in layers. Short, regular revision builds confidence far better than late-night cramming.
- Practise under exam-like conditions once or twice: same time, quiet room, timed paper. Familiarity reduces fear.
- Make a plan for the paper. Decide in advance how to spend time: read for 10 minutes, start with easier questions, leave 10 minutes to check.
- Prepare the practical things the night before: admit card, stationery, water, route.
In the moment
- Slow breathing. Breathe in for four counts, out for six. Repeat five times. This can calm the body's stress response.
- Name it. Say to yourself, "I feel nervous; that is okay."
- Anchor with the senses. Feel your feet on the floor and your hands on the desk.
- Start where you are strong. An easy question builds momentum.
- If you blank: skip it, do another and return later. The answer often surfaces.
Change the story
- Replace "I will fail" with "I have prepared and I will do my best."
- See marks as information about what to improve, not as a verdict on you.
- Remember that one exam does not define a future.
For parents
- Avoid last-minute lectures. Be calm and brief: "I believe in you."
- Keep the home routine steady, with regular meals and sleep.
- Do not compare.
- Celebrate effort after the paper regardless of how it went.
After the exam
Resist the urge to hold a long post-mortem. Rest, then move on to the next paper.
